Commander HANSEN graduated from UCLA in June 1961. As a member of the UCLA NROTC unit, he received his commission in the Regular Navy at graduation. His first tour of duty was as ASW Officer and later Weapons Officer aboard USS BRISTER (DER-327) home- ported in Guam. He subsequently served as Operations Officer in USS HUSE (DE-1 45), com pleting that tour with selection to Destroyer School at Newport, Rhode Island, in June 1965. Graduating as Honorman in Class 13, Commander HANSEN served as Chief Engineer aboard USS HENRY B. WILSON (DDG-7) in San Diego, California, until September 1968, when he reported to Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, California, for advanced education.
He graduated in December 1970 with a Master of Science Degree in Computer Science. After four months of small craft and language school at Mare Island, California, he served
Iin-country Vietnam as a Naval Advisor to the Vietnamese Navy from May 197110 April 1972. Upon returning to the United States, and after a brief period of schooling, Commander HANSEN assumed the duties of Executive Officer, USS GEORGE K. MACKENZIE (DD-836) homeported in San Diego, California. In December 1973, he returned to the Naval Post graduate School, this time as an Instructor in Computer Science and Mathematics.
ln July 1976, Commander HANSEN returned to sea, and to San Diego, as Executive Officer of USS ANCHORAGE (LSD-36). Two years later, he reported for shore duty in his subspecialty with the Navy Regional Data Automation Center in San Diego. He initially served as ADP Systems Director/Plans and later "fleeted up" to Executive Officer. Commander HANSEN assumed command of USS McKEAN (DD-784) on 19 July 1980.
Commander HANSEN's awards include the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achieve ment Medal with Combat "V", Combat Action Ribbon, and Vietnamese Honor Medal First Class.
Commander HANSEN is married to the former Marcia Kay MILLS of Hlllsdale, Michigan. They have two children, Barbara Ann and Brian.
