I served on McKean for about 6 years as a reservist. I made RMC in 1980 on board McKean. I recall a transit up the coast from San Dog to Seattle. Off San Francisco the sonarmen detected something. A submarine shot off some flares but were not the color that they should have been. For about a day we floundered around barely making headway keeping tabs on whatever it was. I recall a lot of formatted classified radio traffic. Some time later I heard that McKean had found some thing that should not have been there. Nothing more specific than that.
